Colonel Newton Cannon, eighth Governor of Tennessee was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, May 22, 1781, was educated in the common schools and moved, with his family to Williamson County, Tennessee while still a boy and was State Senator in the General Assembly, 1811-1812. He enlisted as a private under Jackson in th Creek War, rose to the commission of Captain, then to Colonel of the Tennessee Mounted Rifles. Was elected to Congress succeeding Felix Grundy when he resigned in 1814, continued in Congress until 1823 and served as Governor, 1835-1839. He died at Warpath, Williamson County, September 29, 1842. He was a member of Hiram Lodge #7 at Franklin and of Franklin Chapter #2, and was present and officiated as Grand Marshall at the consecration of the Grand Chapter in 1826.
